A Beatable Addiction?

It is recognised that stopping smoking is one of the most difficult things to do. Of course, it is entirely doable, but it takes guts, willpower, a drive to succeed, and is no picnic during the weaning-off phase. It’s no wonder that so many people attempt it and give up before the final hurdle.

We know the health detriments which come attached to smoking, and we don’t need to be reminded of them, because this is one of the reasons why people choose to stop the habit in the first place. Aside from that, there is the financial element, because with the rising cost of cigarettes, this money could be saved, and more and more people simply can’t afford to continue funding the habit.

Health and money are two great reasons to decide to finally kick the habit for good.

So, what’s the alternative?

You might have heard of ‘vaping’, or e-cigarettes, and it is thought that around 2.6 million adults in Britain alone now use this method of smoking, in order to cut down and eventually stop. This has many advantages, not least the fact that e-cigarettes are thought to be around 95% less harmful than regular cigarettes, and whilst they’re not without their dangers and concerns, when you weigh up the risks, they do come out considerably better against conventional methods.

There has been talk that in the future e-cigarettes could be prescribed by healthcare organisations in order to help smokers quit, but in the meantime it’s down to the individual to fund the endeavour.

So, what are e-cigarettes?

You’ve probably seen them when you’ve been walking down the street and seen someone using them, and you’ve no doubt seen shops on the High Street which now sell them; basically, an e-cigarette is a false cigarette, which uses liquid nicotine which is heated up in the heating coil held within the device, then turns to vapour, and is inhaled by the person using it. You can buy different flavours of the vapour, to sweeten the taste, and this has become a huge money making market over recent months.

Is it cheaper?

Well, yes. We know that cigarettes are expensive, and they’re getting more expensive year on year. E-cigarettes work out cheaper, they are better for you in comparison, and they provide smokers with a way to cut down, and hopefully stop in the future.

Maybe you’ve tried to stop before and failed, become disheartened by your failure, or perhaps you simply feel that you’re not ready to go cold turkey just yet; in that case e-cigarettes provide a useful and more affordable version of middle ground. The danger is that you simply continue using them, without the final push to stop completely, but when you use them with that aim in mind, they are a very positive step.

Smoking is basically bad for your health and very bad for your bank balance too, so if you can find a way to make kicking out the habit easier, surely this is something you should be exploring.
