Why Do People have Cosmetic Surgery?

Like everything in life, there is good and bad, and in the case of reasons for wanting to undergo a cosmetic surgery procedure, there are good reasons to go ahead, and there are bad reasons too.

Let’s look at them in turn.

Starting with the bad

If you’re wanting a cosmetic surgery procedure because you want to change everything about yourself then you need to question why. Many people see a different person in the mirror to what is true in reality, and in some severe cases this can be down a condition called body dysmorphia. A good plastic surgeon will ask you the reasons why you want a procedure done at the first consultation, and they will assess whether you are doing it for the right reasons, whether the procedure is realistically right for you and your skin or body type, and if he or she feels your reasons are down to a more psychological problem, then you will be advised as such.

Wanting to please someone else, such as a partner, or trying to compete with a friend is another big no no, as is trying to get ahead in your career by having a procedure done. If you’re going to do it, you need to do it for you, and you alone.

Of course there are good reasons too

If you truly feel unhappy with one part of your body or face, and it is causing you significant distress or self-confidence issues, then of course seeking cosmetic surgery help is perfectly acceptable. You shouldn’t have to live with a part of yourself which causes you such bad feeling, and there are many other reasons that also fit into this section.

For instance, once the ticking clock of ageing begins, many people lose a certain portion of their self-confidence, and there are many procedures which can help correct this, and slow down that clock. Similarly, those who have a medical problem, such as difficulty breathing through the nose, could find great relief by undergoing a procedure. Anyone who has suffered with acne and has been left with significant scarring, again, surgery could help, as with anyone who has suffered an accident that has left them disfigured in some way.

Another popular reason, especially for surgery such as liposuction, is that loss of weight has left behind excess skin or stubborn pockets of fat that refuse to go. In this case, surgery again could help.

As you can see, there are good reasons and there are bad reasons. Before you embark on a cosmetic surgery journey, make sure your reasons fall firmly into the good camp.
