It’s All Theatre Darling!
Checking out a Broadway show is a must do when you visit New York, but how do you figure out which one to go to? And indeed, how do you get tickets in the first place?
Well, to answer the first question, what to see really depends on your personal preferences, but there are a few shows which seem to be ultra-popular with just about everybody, and have been famous for years and years. For instance, Phantom of the Opera – everyone has heard of it, and many people dream of seeing this epic production on Broadway; it’s possible! Another one is Cats – this is another show which is world famous for a very good reason. Perhaps you fancy seeing Chicago, and again, you’ll certainly get your money’s worth in terms of entertainment. Wicked? The tale of the wicked witch is one which calls out to most interests, and again, this is one of the most popular on Broadway today.
Where is Broadway? You might not really know, but basically Broadway is a collective term for the Theater District of New York, and this is where the huge productions call home. You will be able to check out big named stars, even a few Hollywood stars, and some up and coming talent too. The district is also surrounded by some fantastic restaurants, to help you really make a night out of it, and if you want to base yourself around here to take advantage of more than one show, there are plentiful hotels too. The fact the Broadway is very centrally placed in Manhattan also makes it a must do whenever you visit this city that really never sleeps.
Next up, you’ll want to know where you can get Broadway tickets from, and this is the tricky bit. Tickets for Broadway shows aren’t hard to get, but you need to know that you’re getting them from the right place. There are countless ticket touts who will pounce on you the moment you show even the slightest bit of vulnerability, only too happy to steal your cash in exchange for a ‘ticket’ – it’s not a ticket at all, it’s a worthless piece of paper. The advice is therefore to only ever purchase tickets from the Box Office of the actual theatre, or to head online to a reputable website, such as Broadway Show Tickets, for example.
Every single month there is a re-jig of shows and times, so you’re never going to get bored, but obviously there are some which have been on Broadway for years, such as the aforementioned Chicago, Cats, and Phantom. The Book of Mormon is making waves currently, as well as Kinky Boots, and Sunset Boulevard. On Your Feet and In Transit are up and coming shows, perhaps a little further down the recognition list, but they are certainly entertaining and look sure to stick around for a long time to come.
We of course have to mention Cirque Du Soleil. If you have long been fascinated by acrobatics and special effects, this is one show which will leave your mouth hanging open for all the right reasons!
